Basalt rebar reinforces stone sculpture concrete foundation

January 7, 2018 by Basalt Guru Leave a Comment

Devine Escapes stone sphere

Devine Escapes used basalt rebar to reinforce the concrete foundation of a dry stone sculpture: Stacked Stone Garden Sphere. "...like any sculptor or dedicated craftsman, I wish for my works to last. For this reason, basalt rebar was used to reinforce the concrete foundation." "Since it (basalt rebar) is so much stronger than steel, we were able to go with a smaller size … [Read more...]

UM build bridge entirely reinforced with composite materials

University of Miami's Bridge of the Future

The University of Miami's College of Engineering built a concrete bridge reinforced with composite materials instead of steel. "The project provides quantifiable proof of concept of the use of fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) in such structures. The University began construction of the bridge in November 2015; it was completed in May 2016... This type of bridge will resist … [Read more...]

Why use basalt rebar vs steel rebar for reinforcing concrete?

Newport RI, beach concrete wall with spalling

All along the beach in Newport, RI there is evidence of what happens when steel is used to reinforce concrete. Good for a short time and then the galvanic reactions occur. Spalling as it is called, pops large chunks of concrete apart. Especially near salt water, corrosion of steel and Portland cement is obvious and visible everywhere. Basalt fibers and reinforcements are the … [Read more...]

Hawaii Fire Pit with Basalt Rebar

June 30, 2016 by Basalt Guru Leave a Comment

basalt rebar used in fire pit construction

A fire pit installation in Hawaii uses basalt reinforcement rebar to take the heat! Lava rock calls for lava rebar. Basalt lava rock fibers make reinforcements that expand and contract at the same rate as concrete unlike other fibers. Also, poly fibers and fiberglass fibers can not take extreme heat as well as basalt and costs more. Our basalt rebar comes in coils so … [Read more...]

Basalt as a solution for steel rebar problems in concrete

June 22, 2016 by Basalt Guru 10 Comments

steel rebar corroding in concrete

I came across another article which references the problems associated with the constant use of steel rebars in our infrastructure. Adding a significant amount of basalt reinforcements to these projects would go a long way in providing a much longer lasting solution. It is time for engineers to integrate Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymers (BFRP) into these projects. Long runs … [Read more...]

Working with concrete and steel for over 25 years has given me an innate understanding of the properties and use of these materials. From rebuilding old homes in New England to hospitals in Alaska, union work on the pipeline, and commercial jobs from Hawaii to Arizona and Florida, I have seen a great deal!

My motivation when seeing people lose their homes to fires, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, etc. is the knowledge that by building correctly many of these homes, and lives can be spared. New standards are in place such as installing better windows or hurricane ties. However to me these are just band-aids on the greater problem of building correctly in the first place. Homes can be built today with designs and new reinforcements that can withstand the elements.
